Wings Across Alabama
Montgomery, Alabama
Start Date 2008
Brief Description
This project was developed by Wings Across Alabama. It was funded through the 2008 Campaign for Mental Health Recovery state implementation awards.
Results The organization developed and held various events featuring an entertainment act (band, comedian, or other entertainer) of interest to college age young adults. They combined recovery education with entertainment. Wings Across Alabama focused on two historically African-American college campuses, along with one urban university, and a Native American reservation. More than 1,100 individuals participated in the events at the following locations: Alabama State University, University of Alabama, Troy University, Alabama A&M University. Two of the occasions were at Native Americans events: First Nation’s Outreach Spirit of the Wolf Pow Wow and Ma Chis Lower Creek Indian Reservation.
In addition to the entertainment events, college age consumers, siblings, and peers gave educational presentations. The organization also used the CMHR radio PSAs at Troy University, Alabama State University, and Alabama A&M University. In addition project staff appeared on campus radio programs at Alabama State University (WVAS) and Alabama A&M University (WJAB). The Project created a CMHR specific area on their Website at http://www.wingsalabama.org/family/.
